Dangers of Leaving Varicose Veins Untreated

varicose veins

Varicose veins can become more than just a cosmetic concern. They can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. These complications can range from moderate to serious issues such as superficial venous thrombophlebitis, bleeding episodes and (thankfully rarely) deep vein clots. The following are several problems that could occur when venous disease is overlooked.

Untreated Varicose Veins Can Cause an Uncomfortable Array of Symptoms

Beyond being noticeable, varicose veins can feel uncomfortable. People with varicose veins also report bouts of leg fatigue, swelling, cramps and “restless legs”. Without the benefit of medical intervention, these are symptoms that may worsen over time. In addition to contending with a number of persistent and highly inconvenient symptoms, however, there is also the increased likelihood of developing more severe conditions.

Spontaneous Bleeding

Spontaneous bleeding is always a potential issue with untreated varicose veins. Over time, varicose veins gradually wear down the skin. This can make cuts, scrapes and other, minor abrasions, incredibly serious issues. Although there is usually minimal pain with the spontaneous bleeding that varicose veins are known to cause, significant blood loss can occur unless an effort is made to establish an effective treatment and prevention plan.

Lipodermatosclerosis

Untreated superficial vein disease may create chronic inflammation in the surrounding soft tissue and skin on the legs. Long bouts of inflammation can lead to a progressive discoloration and thickening of the skin and soft tissues due to scarring. This is called lipodermatosclerosis.

Leg Ulcers

If left untreated, lipodermatosclerosis increases a person’s likelihood of developing venous leg ulcers. Such ulcers heal poorly, if at all, without dealing with the underlying source of the problem: superficial venous insufficiency.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis or DVT may be the most serious condition associated with untreated superficial venous disease. The greatest risk that DVT poses is that of having the blood clot travel further up the body toward the heart and lungs and is considered to be life-threatening.
