How Can Pregnancy Affect My Leg Veins?

leg veins

Pregnancy causes many changes within a woman’s body. Hormones rapidly change, as does the overall chemistry of a woman’s body.

While most changes are beneficial to the baby growing inside of a woman, some of them may cause undesirable side effects. The leg veins are an area where different undesirable symptoms may manifest themselves. Let’s explore why venous problems may develop, and what can be done to treat them.

Why Do Vein Problems Develop as the Result of Pregnancy?

The primary reason vein problems develop in the legs as the result of pregnancy revolves around the changes that occur throughout the body and in the uterus.

First, the woman’s body increases estrogen/progesterone to assist with pregnancy. At the same time, it affects the elastic quality of veins, making them stretchier. The uterus expands as the fetus develops, which makes it difficult for blood to flow from the legs up to the heart. As there is a baby growing, more blood is needed to support it.

Additionally, the little bun inside is just getting too big for the oven. As a result, the baby pushes against nearby veins. This is what puts pressure on leg veins.

What Can Be Done About Vein Problems Due to Pregnancy?

The best way to treat vein problems during pregnancy is to take an approach that focuses on treating your entire body. This means keeping your legs elevated when necessary and eating a healthy diet. Compression stockings can help provide some relief to venous disease.

In addition, avoid standing or sitting for too long. When you can, go for a walk. If you’ve been standing on your feet all day (hopefully you haven’t), sit down. You can even use that time to elevate your legs.

In the event that the symptoms of venous disease are present after you’ve given birth, you can turn to a few safe and affordable treatment options available to you. Minimally-invasive treatments like sclerotherapy can offer a real solution to your problem. Vein specialist Dr. Rosen will do everything to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure.
